CGI Aptitude Test

1. The milk and water in two vessels A and B are in the ratio 4:3 and 2:3 respectively. In what ratio the liquids in both the vessels be mixed to obtain a new mixture in vessel c consisting half milk and half water?
A. 8:3
B. 7:5
C. 4:3
D. 2:3
Explanation:
Milk in 1-liter mixture of A = 4/7 liter.
Milk in 1-liter mixture of B = 2/5 liter.
Milk in 1-liter mixture of C = 1/2 liter.
By rule of allegation we have required ratio X: Y.

X : Y
4/7 2/5

\ /
(Mean ratio)
(1/2)
/ \
(1/2 “ 2/5) : (4/7 “ 1/2)
1/10 1/14

So Required ratio = X: Y = 1/10: 1/14 = 7: 5.

2. A train cross a 450 m bridge in 42 s and another bridge 650 m length in 50 s what is approximate speed of train in km/h?
A. 90 Km /hr.
B. 25 Km /hr.
C. 30 Km /hr.
D. None of these
Explanation:
Let the length of the train be L.
Then,
=> (450 + L)/42 = (650+L)/50.
=> L= 600 m.
Now, speed = (450+600)/42 or (650+600)/50 = 25 m/s i.e. 25*(18/5) = 90 Km /hr.

3. For rs 600 Mr. Karan can buy a max of 24 cups of tea and for rs 1500 he can buy a maximum of 15 cups of coffee. He has 2200 in his pocket and purchase 8 cups of tea what is the max no of cups of coffee he can purchase with the remaining money?
A. 20
B. 30
C. 40
D. 50
Explanation:
Let X = Rate of 1 cup of tea.
And Y = Rate of 1cup of coffee.
And Z = Max no of cups of coffee he can purchase with the remaining money.
From question we have,

X = 600/24 = 25.
and Y = 1500/15 = 100.
So acc. to the question,
=> 8X + ZY = 2200
=> 8(25) + 100Z = 2200
=> 200 + 100z = 2200
=> Z = 20.

4. NHAI employs 100 men to build a highway of 2km in 50 days working 8 hours a day. If in 25 days, they completed 1/3 part of work. than how many more employees should NHAI hire to finish it in time working 10 hours a day?
A. 55
B. 60
C. 70
D. 50
Explanation:
The given problem can be written in a tabular form like below: -
Men Days Hour Work
Planned 100 50 8 1
Actual 100 25 8 1/3
Remaining ? 25 10 2/3
We can apply chain rule now.
Total men required to complete the remaining work = 100× (25/25) × (8/10) × (2/3)/ (1/3) = 160.
So additional men required = 160 - 100 = 60.

5. P is able to do a piece of work in 15 days and Q can do the same work in 20 days. If they can work together for 4 days, what is the fraction of work left?
A. 8/15
B. 7/15
C. 1/15
D. None of these
Explanation:
P's 1-day work = 1/15
Q's 1-day work = 1/20

Work done by (P + Q) in 1 day = 1/15 + 1/20 = 7/60.

Work done by them in 4 days = (7/60) * 4 = 7/15.

Work left = 1 - (7/15) = 8/15.

6. A city has a population of 3,00,000 out of which 1,80,000 are males. 50% of the population is literate. If 70% of the males are literate, the number of literate females is: -
A. 20000
B. 24000
C. 30000
D. 34000
Explanation:
Total No. of male=1,80,000
Total No. of female=1,20,000
Since 70% of the male are literate,
so, 1,80,000*70/100=1,26,000
Total 50% population r literate=1,50,000
So, total No. of female=1,50,000-1,26,000=24,000.

7. A man employs 20 men, 15 women and x children. He pays daily wages of Rs 10 per man, Rs 8 per women and Rs 4 per child. His daily average wages bill works out to Rs 8.50 per person. What is the value of x?
A. 5
B. 15
C. 10
D. 1
Explanation:
Given that there are 20 men(M), 15 women(W), x children(C)

Total daily wage given by the man to all (M+W+C) = 8.5∗(20+15+x)
and this should be equal to the sum of wages received by individual i.e.
8.5∗(20+15+x) = (20∗10) +(15∗8) +(x∗4)
or, 170+127.5+8.5x=200+120+4x
or, 4.5x=320−297.5
or, x=22.5/4.5=5.
So there are 5 children (equal to x).

8. A subscriber is allowed to make certain no of telephone calls for a lump sum charge of Rs 300. Beyond that he is charged at a certain rate per call. Two subscriber together make 1400 calls, and were charged Rs 425 and Rs 925 respectively. If the single person had made all of the 1400 calls, he would have been charged Rs 1550. How many telephone calls are allowed for the first Rs 300?
A. 330
B. 450
C. 400
D. 840
Explanation:
Assume that x be the number of calls allowed for Rs 300.
Also, we know that the call rate is constant in both the cases.
Case 1: When both the subscribers made calls
amount per call
= Total Amount Paid / Total Calls made
= ((425 + 925) - 2 * 300) / (1400 - 2n)
= (1350 - 600) / (1400 - 2n)
= (750) / (1400 - 2n) -> (Equation 1)
Case 2: When only one person is made all the calls
amount per call
= (1550 - 300) / (1400 - n)
= 1250 / (1400 - n) -> (Equation 2)
Here both equation 1 and equation 2 are equal i.e.
750 / (1400 - 2n) = 1250 / (1400 - n)
=> (1400 - n) / (1400 - 2n) = 1250/750
=> (1400 - n) / (1400 - 2n) = 5 / 3
=> 3 (1400 - n) = 5 (1400 - 2n)
=> 4200 - 3 n = 7000 - 10 n
=> 10 n - 3 n = 7000 - 4200
=> 7 n = 2800
=> n = 400.

9. How many ways can 360 be written as product of two numbers?
A. 10
B. 11
C. 12
D. 18
Explanation:
360 => 2^3 * 3^2 * 5^1 [i.e. a^x * b^y * c^z)
No. of ways can be written as a prod of 2 no's is
=> (x+1) *(y+1) (z+1)/2
=> (3+1) *(2+1) *(1+1)/2
=> 24/2 = 12.
Hence, the required number is 12.

CGI Logical Reasoning Test

10. Ten years ago, A was half of B in age. If the ratio of their present ages is 3:4, then what will be the total of their present ages?
A. 35 years
B. 30 years
C. 20 years
D. 15 years
Explanation:
Let A's age 10 years ago be x years.
Then B's age 10 years ago be 2x years
=> (x+10) / (2x + 10) = 3/4.
=> 4(x+10) = 3 (2x + 10).
=> x = 5.
Hence,
Total of their present ages: -
= x+ 10 + 2x + 10.
=> 3x + 10.
=> 35 years.

11. The average age of a group of 10 students is 15 years. When 5 more students join the group, the average age increase by 1 year. The average age of the new students is?

C. 18 years
D. 16 years
Explanation:
Total age of 10 students = 150 years.
Total age of 15 students = 240 years.
Total age of 5 new students = 240 - 150 = 90 years.
Hence, Average age of 5 new students = 90/5 = 18 years.
